Worms Way!!

When there is a McDonalds, Burger King, or some sort of fast food restaurant on practically every street corner, it’s important to ask ourselves what kinds of food are we really putting into our bodies? Good health as a nation, a collective population, is a primary goal of public health. And a huge factor in how healthy one is is determined by the things that he or she eats. As a group, we chose to place our public health sticker at Worm’s Way. A gardening center that provides customers with earth-friendly products that allow anyone to be able to grow organics, and where there is a knowledgeable staff ready to answer any gardening questions one may have. It’s important that Americans research the qualities of food that they eat on a daily basis, such as the kind of “beef” in Taco Bell tacos, or even the kind of fruits and vegetables available to us on Publix shelving units. Two thirds of the American society is considered over weight, this is an important public health issue. It is important for people to realize that there are great ways to ensure one’s health, and one way is by growing your own fruits and vegetables, organically. No pesticides or chemicals added, that in the long run are extremely bad for any ones health. Worm’s way is a gardener’s heaven; materials include nothing but natural chemical free ingredients, which ensures the best quality of food anyone could grow for themselves, which is why we chose Worm’s way as the place to put our public health sticker. The foods you eat today are what affect your health tomorrow. Know your options, you can become your main food supplier, with just bit of research.

  1. In my Epidemiology Class we are learning about the Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and how it is probable to resurface at any time and have a catastrophic impact on the world. Your blog reminds me of that because we saw a little example of this during the swine flu epidemic a few years ago. It's scary to think that viruses continue to mutate and jump between species(like the swine flue and the H3N8 virus that jumped from birds to horses and now to dogs.)This is all to say that not only do we have to worry about the chemicals and hormones they put in our poultry and produce, but we also have to be concerned with the diseases they may be exposing us to... Those of which we don't have a cure and aren't prepared to battle as a country. Good choice of location!

  2. i agree 100 %, obesity is a huge problem. Researching what we eat is a great idea. We don't even know half the things that we eat at fast food restaurants. We should be worried about all the hormones and other things they put in our food. On top of that they can have diseases in them. overall i really like the location you picked and the ideas you tried to convet.

  3. I think this was a great location. Usually people don't think about growing their own food due to lack of time or simply convenience because food is so readily available in stores or through the drive-thru, espescially when you're on the run. We as Americans have gotten lazy and it does show. The upcoming generation has become more obese and more dependant on fast-food. fresh home grown food may be the way to go after all, for health reasons due to the fact that the hormones injected into the products are then eaten by the consumer in turn causing later health problems . So i couldnt agree more with this post, its like food for thought.

  4. I had never heard of Worm's Way before this, but I think the idea is great. Fast food joints are a major contributor to the soaring rates of obesity in the United States. Exposure to the information and supplies to grow your own food will benefit individual health and the environment - both very much a part of public health.

  5. Worm's Way was an excellent choice of location to put the public health sticker. Before reading this description I had no idea a place like this existed. Most people buy their organics from Publix or other supermarkets. I feel that Worm's Way promotes healthy eating habits which in return ensure a healthy lifestyle. The American society needs more places like this one to limit cases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease that is caused by obesity.

  6. "The foods you eat today are what affect your health tomorrow" is the sentence from the post that stuck out to me the most. This is not only an excellent place for the sticker, but it also gives our community information and knowledge about being able to plant and grow organic fruits and vegetables. What we put into our bodies is so very important like previously stated and if people are aware of the alternative things they could be eating, hopefully it will give other healthy options for people all over the community. Many people don't research the quality of food they get from fast food places or grocery stores, we usually just assume that it is safe enough for us to eat. By growing your own pesticide free fruits and vegetables there is assurance that you are putting healthy things into your body.

  7. I have never heard of Worm's Way so I was very excited to read your blog! In the last six months my family and I have decided to change our lifestyle and cut out fast food, soda, and your basic "junk" foods. We are not only looking better, but we feel better as well! It is awesome that we have small business's around that can TEACH us how to make the right choices with what we eat and/or grow in our gardens. Great post!

  8. This is by far, the most important problem people face in this country today! People need to realize how important nutrition is when it comes to our own health. Having a balanced diet that includes lots of vegetables, fruits, protein, and good fats and good carbs is definitely the way to go! On to your post, I have never heard about Worm's Way before, but absolutely love it! Chemical and pesticide -free products are the best way to have a better balanced diet. These organic products include more nutrients and are much better for our bodies! What a great way to try and prevent obesity than by checking this place out. And as the cherry on top, growing our own food is much better for our beautiful planet Earth! So, why not give it a try? This is definitely public health!
