Buckle up!

We encounter things that deal with public heath every day. The clean water we drink, the “no smoking sign” we pass, even the hand sanitizer we squirt on our hands. But few people realize that we can actually wear something public health related, and choosing to not wear it could have fatal results... Seat belts!
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns the public that not wearing a seat belt could be a deadly decision. Recent reports claim that seat belts save 9,500 lives each year. Unfortunately those same reports calculate that only 68 percent of those who are on the road actually make sure to buckle up.
While public health does deal with preventing and treating diseases it also serves to educate the public on things they can do to prevent harming their health. This is why our group decided to slap our sticker on a 2007 Hyundai Elantra’s seatbelt, to remind the public that every time you get into a car the couple of seconds that it takes to click on a seat belt could be what ends up saving your life. In fact, it is estimated that if only 90 percent of Americans were to buckle up before heading out into the road, annually we could prevent 5,500 deaths and numerous injuries.
The main goal of public health everywhere is to ensure that the public stays alive and healthy.  Seat belts are the single most effective device in a car that does that, for those who wear them they prevent death and injury.

  1. Really inventive! I didn't even consider that your own vehicle could be considered as a place for public health awareness, and yet it is the things we don't consider that are important. As a person who has experienced being in a car accident or having loved ones who have been in them as well, wearing a seat belt makes all the difference in the world. My first car accident could have been so much more damaging if I didn't make it a habit to make sure that I was secure as well as the person I was driving with that day. This was a great choice and the fact that you included statistics as well added a stronger level of importance.

  2. This is such a great example of public health and it really does make all the difference in the world, if someone does happen to get into a car accident. Wearing a seat belt gives people some level of comfort when driving and helps make them feel protected. Not everyone wears a seat belt and that can become a problem because then someone is risking their life. Seat belts can make all the difference in the world, when in an accident, so care about your safety and buckle up!

  3. I really liked how you all included the statistic data of seat belts. I think with that, people are able to understand more what the danger of NOT wearing a seat belt could do to them. Many many car accidents happen each day, and some lives are harmed or lost because of them not wearing a seat belt. My grandma was badly injured several years back because she wasn't wearing a seat belt, and not, every time I get into a car with her, she makes sure everyone buckles up before driving on the road. I agree with you all that the public health project is to warn and protect the people in our community. Even though it sucks to get a ticket because you're not wearing a seat belt, but if we really think about it, the officer is just thinking for the better of our safety. Therefore, remember to "Click It or else you'll get a Ticket!"

  4. This is a good example of public health that not many people would have thought of. Wearing a seat belt is something that could help save lives and protect us during a crash. However, many people choose not to wear one for a variety of reasons. This could be dangerous to our health, and the health of others. If you are injured in a crash, then your health is affected. People need to realize that the simple act of buckling up could make a major difference in our community.

  5. To buckle or not to buckle your seat belt? That is the question every time people get in the car. With more and more people driving on the road, driving is one of the most dangerous things we do on everyday basis. There are way too many factors whether an accident may or may not happen but wearing a seat belt can be one factor we have control over and could be a vital factor on whether you live or die. It is the easiest thing we can do to protect ourselves on the road.
