Sanitize me, please!

We placed our public health sticker on the hand sanitizer located on the second floor near the Food Court at the University Mall. We chose this location because we acknowledged the fact that the mall is a central place in Tampa, with a lot of daily traffic from customers especially college students. More specifically, we decided to place our sticker in the Food Court because we realize that many individuals do not wash their hands before eating for various reasons, including laziness, which makes the central location of the hand sanitizer a more community-friendly approach to maintaining the health of the public. Furthermore, it is appropriate to include the hand sanitizers in this area specifically to be sure that the employees are serving the food with clean hands and not further transmitting germs to customers. This represents a public health issue because germs and bacteria are easily transmitted from hand to mouth contact, whether it is from handling money at the food court vendors to holding the rail when walking up the stairs or escalator. This issue is important because the convenience of hand sanitizers allows the community to clean their hands whenever a bathroom is not available or within a reasonable distance. Because people do not realize the amount of bacteria and germs they come into contact with on a daily basis, it is important for public places to keep a clean environment, as well as the necessary equipment (hand sanitizers), in order to maintain the health of the community.

  1. I thought the installation of the hand sanitizer in various locations had to be one of the smartest ideas for practicing public health. Honestly, I was overjoyed when I saw one at the University Mall. I go to the mall a lot and I practically live in the food court. ( I love mall food for some reason.) Seeing this stand makes me feel a lot better about the food that is prepared for me.

  2. I think that this was a very good spot to put your public health sticker! As you said many people are lazy when it comes to washing hands before and after meals and do not realize the health harm that they can potentially cause themselves. I work at the mall, so I see the poor use of sanitation everyday and it's just plain sad. Hopefully through your efforts more people that visit that mall on a daily basis will become more educated and sanitize their hands.

  3. I think hand sanitizers are very important in public health. People sneeze and cough in their hands, they touch doors, and just go and eat thinking that their hands are clean. Some people would not wash their hands even if they saw dirt on their hands. They get sick and wonder why they're sick. Personally, I prefer washing hands because some hand sanitizers have that sticky feel to it, but when the bathroom is far away and hand sanitizers are close by, I definitely use hand sanitizers.

  4. This is a great place to put your sticker! I do not believe that people realize the amount of germs that are spread by everyday interaction. Think about the number of hands you shake per day and the amount of different germs that you accumalate in a days time. Having a hand sanitizer in the mall is one of the smartest place's to put one. In case you did not know, money is the object that carries the most amount of fecal matter. Mall's are one of the places where a hand exchange of money is likely to occur so it would only make sense to put a hand sanitizer in the food court. I apporve of this blogg for this is definitely Public Health.

  5. Overall I think this is probably one of the best places to put the public health sticker. It exemplifies what public health means, and is a great method to help people without intruding on their daily lives. It is also a great example of the "field of dreams" effect, since normally hand sanitization is not something people are thinking about constantly, but once they see it they will use it. Also, the actual use of sanitizer makes the area a much safer place, since germs are literally all over the mall, whether it is due to all of the different people touching things or a sick person entering. There is a lot of prevention going on with hand sanitizer, and I think it is a great example of public health.
