Time to Hit the Gym

Public health is everywhere! Though most people have no idea that public health surrounds them in their everyday life, one who is educated about the prevention of diseases and promotion of a healthier life that “public health” is aware of this fact. This broad subject not only surrounds us but it furthers education and awareness throughout ones community to help maintain a healthy “public” life and community. As a group, we chose a place that is surrounded by people every day whom which may not be aware that has “public health” written all over it. The location we chose to establish our bright red sticker on was a local gym. Naturally, this gym is active at all times of the day; morning, noon and night. The reasoning for our choosing this location is because a gym is a place where people go daily to not only benefit their physique but most importantly benefit their health. Thus, we thought a gym would be a perfect place to sponsor “public health” and promote the awareness that a gym is not only a place for toning those “rock hard abs” or “pumping some iron” it is also a place that manages stress in a healthy way which may improve self-esteem and self confidence thus creating a healthier life. As we know, being overweight or in extreme cases being obese has been an ongoing problem in the United States that remains today. Going to the gym easily helps people fight this increasing issue. One of the leading causes in the United States of death is heart disease. Therefore, going to a gym is one way to help prevent this disease, as well as additional measures to exercising. It also lowers the risk of diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and many other diseases. Educating others about inactivity and putting the gym in your daily routine is in fact "public health".  Although the idea of being active has been drilled into our heads, maybe a bright red sticker will make it easier by get the message across that “public health” remains and is here to remain in everyone’s everyday life, no matter where you go.

  1. Well said, the gym is a great starting place for those who wish to better their lifestyles. By weightlifting and through cardiovascular exercise, one is able to promote long-term benefits such as controlling weight, combating health conditions like high blood pressure and cholesterol, improving one's self-esteem, boosting energy levels, and promoting better sleep. I also wanted to mention another public health issue that appears at gyms: germs! With so many people sharing exercise equipment there is a great opportunity for germs to spread so it is important to wash your hands before and after your workout.

  2. I see my fellow gym-head Andre commented on this one as well (lol). But I can definitely relate to this one since I also go to the gym. I feel that this is a very important example of Public Health because so many people go to the gym to workout, and they get all sweaty and touch many of the same things. So by making people aware, it will only help prevent the spread of infection so that way people can have a great workout experience!

  3. I like how you guys chose the gym, this is one of the best places to raise awareness about Public Health. The gym is the ideal place to better yourself physically, psychologically, and mentally while doing so in a healthful and natural manner. However, another idea to bring up upon this blog is the amount of people that go to the gym to get SWOLE(muscular) in a unhealthful fashion. I know a lot of individuals look for the quick fix: Pounding down 1,000 calorie mass gainers w/over 50 ingredients, taking drugs, lifting heavy weight that their joints can't handle, etc. Don't get me wrong I'm not putting down these methods neither am I an expert on this subject, but these questions are good to think about when it comes to means of Public Health.

  4. The gym was a great place to raise awareness of public health. I couldn't agree more! We are facing so many health problems in our nation that could be avoided with regular exercise and a healthy diet. The benefits of working out are countless. Not only can it prevent certain conditions, but it helps improve muscle tone (which is also vital to proper posture and back and neck health) and mood. Overall, this was a great choice!
