Elevator or Stairs?

We placed our sticker in a stairwell that was located near the elevators in an apartment complex. We choose the stairs because stairs in an apartment complex, or any other building are not only a safety necessity, but also an excellent way to stay active. If there were any kind of fire or electrical issue in the building, the elevators wouldn't work. In order for people to go from floor to floor in the event of an emergency stairs are a public health necessity. If buildings provide stairs that are more readably available (for instance near the elevators) then more people are likely to take them.  Stairs are an excellent way to stay heart healthy and live an active lifestyle. Taking the stairs offers a cardiovascular exercise while also increasing leg strength and aerobic capacity. Weight loss can also be achieved if one decides to use the stairs regularly over the elevator. Changing one simple regular routine to using the stairs, may lead to better health decisions as well. Not only is taking the stairs add to your daily recommended 30 minutes of exercise, it is essentially a free workout. Health isn’t only the benefit of taking the stairs, but it also is a time and energy saver. Stairs offer a faster arrival time to the destination during peak times when elevators are in heavy use. Less energy is consumed when people opted out of using the elevator to take the stairs. Providing access to stairs in buildings offers safety during emergencies and a healthy lifestyle option to everyone.

  1. I like that you ladies chose this because stairs are everywhere, but they are rarely embraced as an option for getting into shape. Previously, “saving time” was the most popular reason for avoiding the stairs. However, taking the stairs you arrive to your destination more quickly than riding the elevator. That’s why I believe it’s essential to take the stairs especially to those individuals who are not as active as others.

  3. You all chose a great location to place your sticker. I love that you noted that the stairs could be incorporated into our "recommended 30 minutes of daily cardiovascular exercise". I totally agree with you all using the stairs will be more energy efficient.

  4. Being an activist of health and fitness, i am more than elated that you guys decided to place this sticker by the stairwell. I strongly believe that the main reason why our country is so obese and overweight is due to the easy access of transportation such as elevators and busses in addition to easy access of food through drive throughs. Not only will you lose a few pounds, but will reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease adding many years to your life. Who wouldn't want that?! Plus it tightens your glutes:)

  5. Wow, I would have never thought of stairs vs the elevator as a public health issue but you all are absolutely right. Although more often then none, elevator is the preferred choice, if there is a fire then stairs have to be there to get out safely. I also agree that taking the stairs can contribute to physical health, although I think I will leave that to the my gym.

  6. Elevators versus stairs is really something you come across everyday, but don't realize it's a Public Health issue. I know that I have come across trying to make this decision everyday, especially on campus and in the parking garages. I tend to use the stairs down always and up to the 4th floor, so I like how you mention that its a way to get your daily recommended of exercise in. Great location!

  7. I really do love that you girls did the stairwell since many people don't understand the impact it can make in someone’s life in the long run, especially seniors. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when someone decides to take the elevator to the second floor instead of the stairwell! Taking the stairs instead of the elevator can prevent obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. I try to take the stairs as much as possible; it’s an easy and great way to stay in shape and to tone your legs!

  8. I always take the stairs unless it is a ridiculously large number of flights but places like the Marshall Student Center, I will take the stairs. Whenever I can get some exercise in I will take it because every little bit counts towards living a healthy life style. I loved how Ms. Rasnak explained the design of the College of Public Health building and how it has the stairs closer and more open than the elevator.
