Free Flu Shots!

My group decided to place our “this is public health” sticker on a sign outside of Walgreen’s that said “Flu Shots Available Here!” This Walgreen’s is located on the corner of Fletcher Ave and Bruce B Downs Blvd. We chose this location because Walgreen’s is a common place for a variety of individuals and families to go and therefore this sign could educate a lot of people.

Getting your flu shot is a public health issue for many reasons. The influenza arose as a pandemic in 1918 which killed millions of people. Many people don’t think that today’s flu would hurt them and come up with excuses like, “I never get the flu,” or “Getting the flu isn’t that bad.” Is a million people dying not “that bad?” A flu shot would not only protect the individual from contracting the flu, but if most of the people in a population get the shot then those who don’t are protected by what’s called “herd immunity.” Herd immunity works in a way that if one person doesn’t get the flu shot or can’t for any reason such as allergies, then they are still protected if everyone else around them is vaccinated because they have no one to get it from.

The flu shot is dangerous and can even be fatal so therefore it’s extremely important for the entire public to get their flu shot if possible in order to avoid another pandemic of this virus.  Especially if places like Walgreen’s offer the shot for free, why not take the chance to protect yourself and those around you at no cost?

  2. This is one of the top public health issues that our nation faces today. I think it is great that you guys chose this for the project. As a Pharmacy Technician who worked at Walgreens for about a year, I can testify to the importance of getting your flu shot done. Also, the ease of the process is hard to beat. It usually takes less than 5 minutes to get it done, and it's generally covered my most insurance plans. So I totally agree with you that it should be a no-brainer. Flu shot equals peace of mind!

  3. It's really important to call attention to this Public Health issue considering this flu season has been quite an epidemic. With the increasing number of cases, it is vital that everyone take the time out to get vaccinated. Not doing so puts not only oneself at risk but also their friends, family, and coworkers. They're also being offered free of charge which is even more of a reason to get one. As we all know, not everything in the medical world is free, so do what you can to stay safe and healthy.

  4. I believe that Walgreens giving out free flu shots is a very important part of public health. That sticker might help people realize what public health really is and that they should get the flu shot to help themselves and others. I also love the location you picked because it is visited by not only USF students but also families and others in the community. It is also very important for people to get the flu shot to help stop the spread and the fact that it is free encourages more people to get it.

  5. The fact that Walgreen's is now giving free flu shots is amazing. Usually, what holds others back from the care that they need is because of money and this time it isn't. The flu has become a major problem in the United States and we need more and more people to take the shots to make there a huge chance for everyone to become healthy and take away the risk of getting sick.

  6. I truly love this topic. I used to be one of those people who thought getting the flu shot only causes you to get the flu early then you would have to. After hearing how this flu has become a pandemic this year, I have change my mind set of the flu shot. I have promise myself to get the flu shot once every year, that way I can protect myself and everyone else's around me from getting sick.

  7. Vaccinations are an example of primary prevention, a main goal of public health. Walgreens giving access to maybe those who do know where to get a flu shot or those who may not see their physician on a regular basis is an important to maintaining the flu. Since the flu season happens once year, its prevention is an extremely important issue to public health. I visit Walgreens on a regular basis and I assume many USF students and others in the community do too. This group chose a terrific spot for their “This is Public Health” sticker!

  8. This was a great place to put your sticker because the topic of the Flu is so prevalent today. As an employee of Walgreens, you would be amazed at all the things we have to do to try and get people in to get immunized. Seeing as the shot is free for most people, you would think they would come in a get it! People just don't understand how important primary prevention is to oneself and those around them. Hopefully this sticker will enlighten people and make them want to get vaccinated!

  9. Many people look past the convient availability of flu shots and do not get immunized. Places like Walgreens and CVS offer low price shots that allow anyone really to receive one if they were only willing. I love that you picked this because this will help spread the word of the importance of getting immunized.
