As public health students we have learn that fruits and vegetables are important part of a person’s diet. For this reason, we decided to take our public health blog picture by a stand of fruits and vegetables at Sweet Bay, a local grocery store. We Americans are becoming more and more obese because of our bad eating habits. Our diets compose of foods that contain more starch in them like potatoes, rather than vitamins and nutrients in fruits and vegetables. The recent trends seen in this nations diet is leading to a lack of vitamins and minerals that are required in every person's diet. This could be solved through taking daily multi-vitamins, but a majority of Americans do not engage in this practice. Many areas throughout America have little or no access to fruits and vegetables, creating a “food desert”, degrading the health of all who live in the area.
Obesity has stricken the United States and is now the most serious health threats that the United States has seen. With the fast pace of America, fast food has been the easiest way to acquire food at a reasonable price. Obesity is responsible for declining health outcomes and rapidly rising health care cost (http://publichealthlawcenter.org/topics/healthy-eating). From the transformation of the food guide pyramid in to MyPlate in June 2011, at least half of the consumed food should consist of fruits and vegetables, with vegetables having a larger section than fruits. Public Health is raising awareness also on fast food chains and vending machines to show the number of calories of each item they sell. Our recommendation is that, as we visit our local grocery stores we pay a little more attention to the fruits and vegetables as they help keep us healthy and functional.

  1. I think the idea of posting the sticker in the fruits and vegetables sign in the grocery store was great. I personally know that my diet consists of a small amount of vegetables which I am gradually changing. The statistics and studies on how America is becoming obese are outrageous and need to be changed by diet habits. Fruits and vegetables should be eaten more often because they are very important to our daily diet.

  2. I like this post because not many people realize that adding fruits and vegetables to their diet makes a huge difference in their health. Some people blame genetics for their weight, and though it does have some impact, it is not the entire reason for obesity in America. Adding healthier foods to their diet would greatly improve health and eating fruits and vegetables is just one way to do this.

  3. I believe that placing your sticker on the produce section of the grocery store is a wonderful idea. Many grocery stores deliberately place the produce section close to the entrance to promote impulse buys. This is a great marketing strategy for two reasons, first, it minimizes the loss of income from rotten or bad produce and second, it promotes possible consumption of produce. This is a great way to promote healthier living because currently more then one-third of the global adult population considered obese or overweight, and it is becoming prevalent in children, too.

  4. You are definitely what you eat! Proper nutrition is key for positive health conditions. People in the United States have a higher rate of obesity compared to other nations because of their poor decisions and it is only a plus when people have the ability to access this source of nutrition.

  5. Being healthy is made up of not only exercise, but diet as well. If you don't have the proper nutrients to fuel your body, you won't be able to exercise. I agree with this idea of placing your sticker in the produce section at the grocery store. People need to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet to give them proper energy and nutrients. Without a balanced diet and lifestyle, obesity rates will keep rising.

  6. Obesity is on the constant rise and is a serious problem in the United States. Our food choices reflect our health. This is why we should consume healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables because they provide us with nutrients and vitamins. I agree that Public Health is raising awareness in fast food chains and vending machines. Emphasis is being placed on less calories and trans fat. In vending machines, we see a shift from regular snacks to those that are of reduced fat and reduced sugar. Overall, healthy individuals will make up a healthy community.

  8. I think that out of all the blogs, this is one of the topics that is most influential since nutrition is a main component of a healthy lifestyle. The are not many healthy food choices with good nutritional value at most fast foods and restaurants, yet people are constantly relying on these places for their primary meals. I believe that what you eat makes a large impact on your health. Even though you may not see it now, eating too many baked goods or meals high in cholesterol may lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, among other diseases which affect millions of Americans each year.

  9. Fast food is a major health problem in America, because there are many and it is easy to access. But, this easy access isn't the best way to maintain nutrients and vitamins. Not only would eating the right fruits and vegetables be healthy for our organs, but it will also make us feel better in general. There can be less likely of depression and sluggishness, while people can feel more alert and happy.

  10. I am glad your group took the time to address the issue in America about unhealthy eating. Obesity is a growing problem and can only be stopped in a group effort. I think it is most important to make people aware that eating healthy is easy if you chose grocery shopping verses eating out at fast food restaurants. Also a little exercise can go a long way. Not only does obesity effect individuals' body image but it also effects blood pressure, cholesterol, and so many other things. Unhealthy lifestyles have a domino effect.

  11. I really like this posts because I don't think people realize how big of a problem obesity has become. I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I think its important to inform the public of the food that will help their diet, like fruits and vegetables. Eating foods high in fat don't help your energy levels nor your nutrition. We need to create an environment where we are aware we can live a healthier life.
