Wal-Mart: "Wipe away the germs" - Group 9

Wal-Mart on Bearrs Avenue, Tampa, Florida

As a group, we decided to place our Public Health sticker at the local Wal-Mart of the USF Tampa campus. This is a very popular and busy arena, so we thought it was important that we support Wal-Mart’s public health efforts as well as raise awareness to the fact that there is actually a sanitation stand in Wal-Mart. We believe that this constituted public health as it is promoting good hygiene. Thousands of people venture through Wal-Mart on a daily basis. Thus, it is important that a measure is there to try and minimize the spread of bacteria or viruses - also known as germs- as much as possible. This sanitation stand provides customers the access to wipe down their carts before they begin shopping and their hands. Whilst we stood there for a minute before taking our picture, we saw multiple customers use these wipes either to cleanse their hands or their shopping cart.

This was an important place for us to put this sticker as it so often goes unnoticed yet is very useful. Sometimes we do not see the measures that public health puts in place to protect our health. Wiping down a cart before shopping is very important. Numerous hands touch the carts every day which may contain all types of bacteria’s and viruses. This is an easy way to catch something, by touching a non-sanitized cart and then transferring that to your own body. Also, it is important to wipe down your hands before and after shopping. By wiping your hands before shopping, you are preventing the germs on your hands to transfer to products in the store. This is a good measure to minimize spreading germs from person to person. Once you have been through the grocery store, it is a good idea to wipe down your hands again just as a safety precaution for anything that you may have picked up whilst shopping.

  1. I've honestly never even seen these in Walmart, so I think it's great that you guys have brought attention to it! I've never really thought about all the germs and bacteria that people bring into stores, so I can see how it would get very dirty. If we all used these, we would make the store much cleaner. I think more stores should look into it because it would not only keep their stores cleaner, but also their employees healthier, which would save them money in the end. I think they should keep them randomly throughout the store, near the entrances and exits, and by the cart area so that people have multiple chances to make sure they are staying clean.

  2. I’ve never noticed these in Wal-Mart before. I think it is an excellent idea and perfectly representative of public health. Not only do people touch the carts when they push them, but children also often sit in the carts. Since children have a tendency to touch everything, sanitizing the carts will help prevent the spread of illness.

  3. Like people have posted, I have never noticed these stations before. I wish more locations had these disinfectant stations present so we can decrease the risk of spreading unwanted issues. You never know what people have touched or if they have some health concern that could potentially affect you, so it is good that stores can promote positive health.

  4. I think that this was a very cool idea to place a sticker. When i go into walmart i make sure that i use this and wipe down my cart. Like the blog said so many people go through walmart everday. Many of these people are sick, coughing on their hands and then pushing their carts no thinking that other people are going to be touching them when the cart is placed back. I think more places should have these to help the spead of germs.

  5. Walmart being my main choice for grocery shopping, I have never noticed these sanitation stations. I believe these stations will greatly benefit the customers since most bacterial diseases spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces. These stations will be a preventative measure, especially during flu season.

  6. "Wipe away germs" I love it! I like the fact that you all posted your sticker on the wipes. I absolutely agree with you all "this is public health", many people do not know grocery stores have those. I think your post was great and will help more people use the wipes to "wipe away germs"! This will definitely eliminate the spread of bacteria and viruses, it's a great public health measure.

  7. I'm surprised that so many people are apparently unaware of these wipes since sanitizing seems to be a new trend. Everywhere you go on campus you see gel or wipes. You didn't mention this but, I think these wipes are also really important when it comes to germs from non human vectors such as the birds and squirrels in the parking lot or elemental like pollutants carried in the wind and rain. This is a great measure though since the majority of any population will use a wal-mart at one time or another no matter their socioeconomic status, whether for the convenience or to save money.

  8. I am glad that this was addressed because I always use the wipes at grocery stores and especially Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart on fletcher may be the most unsanitary place I have ever been to. It is important to use wipes to wipe down carts because hundreds of people touch them everyday. Germs are easily transferred from person to person through hand contact and this leads to many different things including sickness. Just image a child sitting in the cart and the person before had the flu, babies are known to put their hands in their mouth and now the child is susceptible and at a higher risk of getting the flu. Public health focuses on prevention of disease so sanitary wipes are necessary.

  9. This was a fantastic choice to place the sticker. It is great that major stores are now offering these sanitation stations. I'm amazed that people have not noticed these in stores. Shopping carts are disgusting in terms of the sheer amount of bacteria and viruses on them. By having stores offer these sanitation stations, the chance of contracting an illness is reduced.

  10. Oh my, to me this is very important and an extremely relevant aspect of hygiene and preventative measures. They have done so many tests that show of all things ( bathroom counters, public restrooms, etc.) that shopping carts carried the most contaminants! I am a mother to a 2 year old and I greatly value being able to shield my son from such things.
